چکیده

Using passive acoustic methods for biodiversity conservation and effective ecosystem monitoring is hindered by laborious, human-mediated processes of accurately identifying biologic anthropogenic sounds within large datasets. Soundscape ecology provides a potential means addressing this need through the use automated acoustic-based indices, which show promise in representing terrestrial environments. However, direct relationship between specific underwater index measurements are largely unexplored. data collected from three broadband hydrophones Ocean Observatories Initiative’s cabled arrays Pacific northwest, we identified periods vocalizing marine mammals sources noise. Automated calculations seven indices were compared across sound type call parameters. Although several did not vary significantly, Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI) increased response to echolocation clicks sperm whales ( Physeter macrocephalus ) burst pulses originating unidentified delphinid species. Measurements Bioacoustic (BI) decreased dramatically whale clicks, more obvious trend when loud parsed moderate quiet clicks. Correlations coefficient confidence interval values ACI BI characteristics indicate strong relationship, was found correlations with calls. A generalized linear mixed-effect model indicated multiple species types contribute significantly variation measurements. Noise generated passing ships consistently resulted Normalized Difference (NDSI) Total Entropy (H) as mammals. These findings provide information on produced sources. This ground-truthing endeavor expands understanding their tool health management purposes.

Blue Whales Respond to Anthropogenic Noise

Anthropogenic noise may significantly impact exposed marine mammals. This work studied the vocalization response of endangered blue whales to anthropogenic noise sources in the mid-frequency range using passive acoustic monitoring in the Southern California Bight. Blue whales were less likely to produce calls when mid-frequency active sonar was present. This reduction was more pronounced when t...

A source separation approach to enhancing marine mammal vocalizations.

A common problem in passive acoustic based marine mammal monitoring is the contamination of vocalizations by a noise source, such as a surface vessel. The conventional approach in improving the vocalization signal to noise ratio (SNR) is to suppress the unwanted noise sources by beamforming the measurements made using an array. In this paper, an alternative approach to multi-channel underwater ...

Acoustic Float for Marine Mammal Monitoring

Our goal is to develop an inexpensive solution to the problem of near real-time monitoring of marine mammals. We are developing an acoustic monitoring system, the QUEphone (Quasi-Eulerian phone), which is based on a commercial profiling float. By deploying a number of these inexpensive systems in advance of an operation, an area can be monitored for the presence of beaked whales and other speci...
